SWIM LESSON INFORMATION

FEE:                                                                                                                             YMCA Member           $15.00                                                                                        Program Participant     $40.00

Classes are held once a week in the spring, fall and winter.  Summer lessons are also available.

  • Classes will be held unless the YMCA is closed.  If YMCA is closed, students may make up missed lesson by attending another scheduled lesson

  • You MUST register for classes during registration time.  A $5.00 late fee will be assessed for all registration made after registration week

  • All swim participants must shower before class

  • Children that require diapers must wear a swim diaper.

SIGN UP DURING PROGRAM REGISTRATION WEEK

1. PIKE (PRESCHOOL, 3-5YRS.)
Designed for the beginning swimmer, children learn the basic pool rules and how to kick are also introduced to jumping in the water, front and back floats and arm paddles. New class limit 5.

2. EEL (PRESCHOOL, 3-5YRS.)
The eel program is designed for children who are familiar with water, but need help to become independent swimmers. Children are introduced to the front glide, sit dive, shallow water bobs, changing positions. All pike skills are also reviewed. New class limit 5.

RAY (PRESCHOOL, 3-5YRS.)
This program is for swimmers who successfully complete the eel program. Swimmers are introduced to kneeling diving, treading water, and rotary breathing. New class limit 5.

1.  POLLIWOG (SCHOOL AGE)
For the beginning school age swimmer, students learn rhythmic breathing, the flutter kick, front float glide, and jumping in shallow and deep water. Basic water safety is also covered. New class limit 6.

2. GUPPY (SCHOOL AGE)
Children review polliwog skills and learn rotary breathing, crawl stroke, and front/back crawl. Children also learn survival float, underwater swimming, turning over and changing directions and reaching assists. New class limit is 6.

3.  MINNOW (SCHOOL AGE)

Designed for the intermediate swimmers. Participants must be able to swim at least one length of the pool to enroll. All guppy skills are reviewed. Also introduced are the breaststoke, treading water, and survival float. New class limit 7.

4.  FISH (SCHOOL AGE)

Fish is designed for advanced swimmers who have successfully completed all minnow program requirements. This class works on developing smoother strokes and building endurance. Open turns are also introduced. New Class limit 7.

5.  FLYING FISH (SCHOOL AGE)

For advanced swimmers who successfully complete the fish program requirements. Flying fish program continues stroke development and concentrates on building a high level of endurance.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Private swim lessons are available to both youth and adult. These lessons are a great chance for more one on one attention. A lifeguard certified YMCA instructor can help you learn the basics or focus on a stroke that needs a little work. See Linsey to receive your punch card prior to the beginning of the session. Each session is 30 minutes in length.

COMPETITIVE SWIM

OTTUMWA HURRICANES

Summer Season begins May 2nd

 

Swim Team is for swimmers willing to work hard and compete in scheduled swim meets.  Emphasis of the program is skill development, sportsmanship and the enjoyment of swim competition.

Ages:  6-18 yrs old

Younger Swimmers - must be able to swim multiple lengths of the pool without touching the bottom.

Skilled Swimmers - must be able to swim strokes in the ranges of 2000-4000 yards per practice. 

Practices:      Monday/Tuesday/Thursday                5:30-6:30pm    Sundays 2:30-3:30pm

Water Babies

A starting point for children as they begin to enjoy swimming. Children also learn how to hold their breath, blow bubbles, kick and paddle. Parents must be able to enter the water with their child to participate. Swim diapers are required.

Ages: 5 months - 3yrs.
Day/Time: Mondays  6:30pm-7:00pm  and 7:15-7:45pm    

                   Fridays 10:30-11am
