The Ottumwa YMCA has something healthy for the entire family!  We offer several different areas for you to reach your potential.  The Life Circuit Center is staffed by a personal trainer and houses a line of electronic Life Fitness equipment.  The newly updated Perkins Cardio Center now houses 31 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, which means less waiting time for treadmills!   The lower level of weight equipment houses a 9-piece plate loaded line and the upstairs houses a complete line of Cybex strength equipment.  Additionally the YMCA has a free weight area and group exercise studio. 

Orientations are FREE and Fitness Staff are available during peak hours

to answer your questions!

 

PERSONAL TRAINING

Personal Training is customized instruction in strength training, cardiovascular conditioning and lifestyle management enabling you to achieve your fitness goals and maintain good health. The Ottumwa YMCA believes overall fitness begins with a healthy spirit, mind and body. We design our personal training program to embody these three principles. Trainers will work with you individually or as a small group, depending on your preference or fitness needs.  All sessions include body composition and fitness testing.  Discounts and special rates available for active older adults (65+) and HS Students!

FITSTART PERSONAL FITNESS PROGRAM

Work with a Personal Fitness Coach to map out a flexible program that works for you!

Regular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non-insulin dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain and osteoporosis.  It also improves your mood and helps you to better manage stress.  To reap all these benefits and more, simply sign up for the YMCA Personal Fitness Program, which is FREE with a YMCA Membership.  Throughout the 12-week program, you'll work with a Personal Fitness coach to develop a plan based on your needs and goals.  You'll get feedback and support from your coach and all of us here at the Y.

Body Composition      Did you know 1 pound of muscle burns TWICE as many calories at rest compared to 1 pound of fat!  This is the single best way to track your progress.  As you start to gain lean muscle and lose body fat, your body weight is going to stay somewhat the same.  Don't let the scale dictate your exercise program!           Members Only:  $3.00

YMCA Group Exercise classes are conducted by instructors that have completed many different fitness certifications and are trained to help you reach your potential safely.  We have a group exercise class for every member; find the right one for you!  Each instructor is also CPR & AED certified by the American Red Cross.

 

HEALTH AND FITNESS GROUP EXERCISE DESCRIPTIONS

 

CARDIO

Step Aerobics -Combines basic step patterns with lots of upper body movement.  Even those that have two left feet will find this class to be a great workout!

TurboKickTM This is a high-energy, pre-choreographed group exercise class that uses the basic moves of kickboxing and the fun and predictability of choreography to give a great workout. This class works every muscle group in the body.

Y-Cycling- An exciting fun filled stationary bike workout!  These workouts are fast paced and a great way to improve your cardiovascular condition.  All classes are set to popular music to help motivate your workout.

ZumbaTM- Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance to create a dynamic, effective cardio workout. These fun and easy routines feature interval aerobic training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. NOW OFFERED FOUR TIMES  IN THE P.M.!!!!!

Drums AliveTM - Enter a new dimension of fitness. Combines traditional aerobic movements with the powerful beat and rhythms of the drums.

Body Blast-Get the heart pumping using a variety of equipment, then wrap it up with weights and core strengthening activities.

Cross Training Challenge-Have you reached a plateau in your workout or looking to challenge your workout in a new way. Come to our NEW Cross Training Challenge class where the instructor will change things up each week. It will include cardio and strength challenges using a variety of equipment and styles. Cross training is a GREAT way to condition different muscle groups, develop a new set of skills, and reduces injury and boredom in your fitness routine!!!

 

ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS

SilverSneakers® MSROM- Muscular Strength and Range of Movement is a trademarked group exercise class designed for older adults. Exercises include work for all major and minor muscle groups addressing strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, balance, and coordination. Class format includes a warm-up and rhythmic range of movement stretch, work with resistance tools, cool down, final stretch and relaxation segment.

SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit- Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch- This class will move your body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

 

MIND/BODY CLASSES

Pilates Reformers- Pilate reformer workouts use a device with attached cables, pulleys and springs. You will use your own body as resistance. The instructor will guide you through Pilates exercises as you increase core strength, flexibility, agility and improve your posture. Pilate reformer workouts also reduce back pain and are friendly to your joints. This is a four week FREE program and REGISTRATION is REQUIRED due to class size and equipment limitations.Registration is available on the 20th of each month for the following month.

Tai Chi- This class mixes Tai Chi, light weight training and yoga moves to improve your overall fitness.

Yoga- Build strength and flexibility, reduce stress and tension, and increase your overall health, energy, and vitality.

PiYo- An athletic blend of Pilates, Yoga and much more. It includes modifications for the group exercise environment, yet offers exercise progressions to challenge to all levels.

Yoga On The Ball- Enhance your Yoga practice! This class will combine classic Yoga postures with the stability ball.

 

STRENGTH TRAINING

Core On Command -Packed with strength and stability exercises for the abdominals and back.  This class is a great way to target the core muscles.

Power Pump - Combining strength and endurance workout, you will pump the body fat away and the muscle up.

Ultimate Upper Body – This class will focus on strength, endurance and flexibility for the upper body using a variety of equipment .

TRX Suspension Training  – Take your strength training up a notch!  This 30 minute workout  will challenge every muscle of your body by using the TRX suspension training straps. This is a four week FREE program and REGISTRATION is REQUIRED due to class size and equipment limitions. Registration is available on the 20th of each month for the following month.

 

FAMILY FITNESS:

YoDrums-This 30 minute class will incorporate the exciting movements of Drums Alive with the relaxing poses of Hatha Yoga. This class will be fun, exciting, and natural way to bond with your child(ren)!!

Members: FREE      Nonmembers: $5.00 per family

 

KETTLEBELL TRAINING:

What is it? It gets back to basic training that requires functional, whole body fitness. Kettlebells require an individual to focus on whole-body conditioning because lifting and controlling a kettlebell forces the entire body, and specifically the core, to contract as a group, building both strength and stability at the same time. Kettlebell workouts engage multiple muscle groups at once along with offering and intense CARDIO and STRENGTH training workout in a short period of time! Must register due to limited amount of equipment and space.

Next session will begin April 18-May 27 (6weeks)

Cost: $10.00 for 1 class and $15 for 2 classes per week

 

WATER FITNESS           

SilverSplash®- Activate your aqua exercise urge for variety! SilverSplash® offers lots of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. No swimming ability is required. CLASS IN POOL

H2O Pump- This water class will be sure to pump you up! If you are looking for that great water workout, join us and enjoy this class. CLASS IN POOL

Aqua Aerobics- If land classes cause too much stress on your joints, try this shallow water class. You will enjoy a gentle exercise routine that is easily adjusted for different levels of fitness. You will increase your strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and range of motion. CLASS IN POOL

**You do not need to be a member of Humana Insurance to participate in these classes---It is open to all members or guests of the YMCA that feel they would benefit from a chair based class.  Scholarships are available. **

AOA Special Events!  We schedule special events for Active Older Adults to participate in throughout the year!  These events give our participants the opportunity to interact with each other and enjoy fellowship together!  Watch for Announcements!

JARREN GOODE, NATURAL TOUCH THERAPIES

 

Jarren graduated from Indian HillsCommunity College in the Massage Therapy program

with over 1000 hours of training. He then went to work in the massage field

gaining more experience, until he opened hisown business, Natural Touch Therapies.

 Jarren’s work is the combination of several different modalities, providing a

 massage that is both therapeutic and extremely relaxing.
