The Ottumwa YMCA has something healthy for the entire family!  We offer several different areas for you to reach your potential.  The Life Fitness Center is staffed by a personal trainer and houses a line of electronic Life Fitness equipment.  The newly improved Perkins Wellness room now houses 31 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, which means less waiting time for treadmills!   The lower level of the newly renovated area now houses a 10-piece plate loaded line and the upstairs houses a complete line of Cybex strength equipment.  Additionally the YMCA has a free weight area and group exercise studio. 

Orientations are FREE and Fitness Staff are available during peak hours to answer your questions!

 

Personal Training is customized instruction in strength training, cardiovascular conditioning and lifestyle management enabling you to achieve your fitness goals and maintain good health. The Ottumwa YMCA believes overall fitness begins with a healthy spirit, mind and body. We design our personal training program to embody these three principles. Trainers will work with you individually or as a small group, depending on your preference or fitness needs.  All sessions include body composition and fitness testing.  Discounts and special rates available for active older adults (65+) and HS Students!

GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING (3-6 PEOPLE)    Who motivates you most?  Who can make your workout fun?  Your FRIENDS of course! Grab a group of your buddies and enlist the help of a PROFESSIONAL TRAINER!!  Two sessions per week plus weekly weigh ins for only $32.00 per month per person.  FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, MONTHLY BANK DRAFT IS AVAILABLE!! See the Wellness Director for more information and to set up initial appointment.

Private/Semi Private Exercise Experience                              

Do you want to try step aerobics but think it's too hard for you?  Interested in power pump but don't know where to start?  Are you intimidated of spinning?  Never fear!  Try that BOSU ball out one on one with a certified group exercise instructor in complete privacy!  Classes are by appointment only and session will be held in our fitness studio scheduled around classes.  MEMBERS ONLY.  $10.00 per half hour session for a single or small group of 2-5.  Contact Wellness Director to set up.

Work with a Personal Fitness Coach to map out a flexible program that works for you!

Regular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non-insulin dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain and osteoporosis.  It also improves your mood and helps you to better manage stress.  To reap all these benefits and more, simply sign up for the YMCA Personal Fitness Program, which is FREE with a YMCA Memberships.  Throughout the 12-week program, you'll work with a Personal Fitness coach to develop a plan based on your needs and goals.  You'll get feedback and support from your coach and all of us here at the Y.

YMCA Life Center

The YMCA PERSONAL FITNESS CENTER completely private from the rest of the members. It is designed to accommodate a person that is new to exercise, prefers a more private or quiet exercise experience, is intimidated by complicated equipment, or prefers to have a trainer with them to answer questions. The Life Center is staffed by a certified Personal Trainer during peak hours of the day, to assist you with, and monitor, your workout. In addition, a complete line of Life Fitness Strength Equipment will ensure that you gain muscle and lose body fat fast. The Life Center also has 9 pieces of cardiovascular equipment to help with burning calories and increasing cardiovascular ability. Workouts that take you from Phase I through Phase IV will meet the needs of beginner to advanced participants. Personal Trainers are available to assist members with workouts during peak times of the day.  See the Wellness Director for more information or to set up an orientation. The Life Center is GREAT for beginning exercisers and active older adults.  Trainers available from 6:30 a.m.– 9:00 p.m. 

Body Composition      Did you know 1 pound of muscle burns TWICE as many calories at rest compared to 1 pound of fat!  This is the single best way to track your progress.  As you start to gain lean muscle and lose body fat, your body weight is going to stay somewhat the same.  Don't let the scale dictate your exercise program!           Members Only:  $5.00

Private Pilates                                                                                             

Our Instructor will develop a Pilates program specifically to your needs.  Private Pilates is an excellent introduction to the practice of Pilates.  Private Pilates is by appointment only and session will be held in our fitness studio scheduled around current classes. 

One hour session, plus initial consultation.

YMCA Group Exercise classes are conducted by instructors that have completes many different fitness certifications and are trained to help you reach your potential safely.  We have a group exercise class for every member; find the right one for you!  Each instructor is also CPR & AED certified by the American Red Cross.

CLASSES AVAILABLE AT THE OTTUMWA YMCA:

Step it up– This workout combines basic step patterns with lots of upper body movement.  Even those that have two left feet will find this class to be a great workout! 

Y-Kick & Box- Are you ready for a martial arts inspired workout?  Jab, kick, and punch your way into fitness with this class.                                                    

Super Circuit  - Mix it Up! This class is a fun combination of cardio, strength, and flexibility training.  Spinning, kickboxing, BOSU’s, steps, flexbands, stability bands, hand weights, yoga, and Pilates moves---you will try them all.  Each class is different, so you will never get bored!  Come and see why interval training is the new trend in fitness!    

Yoga- Utilizing the effectiveness of yoga to emphasize a lean, strong, and shaped musculature of the entire body while increasing energy and stamina to last long after you leave the studio. 

Power Pump - This class will take your workout to the next level!  Combining strength and endurance workout, you will pump the body fat away and the muscle up.  Strength moves set to music will motivate you through this class using advanced techniques in strength & conditioning. 

Y-Cycling- An exciting fun filled stationary bike workout!  These workouts are fast paced and a great way to improve your cardiovascular condition.  All classes are set to popular music to help motivate your workout. 

Cardio Fusion- Who said exercising was boring?  This class will get your heart rate going while using various different moves and equipment in our state of the art fitness studio.  This class is perfect for beginners or experienced members, as you can push yourself at your own pace! 

Body Blast- First, get the heart pumping using a variety of equipment, then wrap it up with weights and core strengthening activities.  This workout is guaranteed to make you sweat! 

Mat Pilates - Get long and lean in this class that focuses on flexibility and strength.

Arthritic Aerobics                                                                                                                        This arthritic class is for all ages, and is geared towards those suffering from Arthritis and looking for the benefits of an 87 degree warm water pool.  This class will gently work your entire body as well as loosen stiff muscles.  (Warren)  Wednesday 8:15-9:00am

Aquacize & Aqua Aerobics                                                                                                         This moderate intensity, no impact water workout uses real hand weights, steps, and bands in the water for a great workout!  Check schedule at front desk.  Water gloves recommended and are available for sale.  (Janice & Warren)

 

                           

SilverSneakers I:  Muscular Strength & Range of Movement is a trademarked group exercise class designed for older adults. Exercises include work for all major and minor muscle groups addressing strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, agility, speed and power.  The class format includes a warm-up and rhythmic range of movement stretch, work with resistance tools, cool down, final stretch and relaxation segment. It is an equipment-based, multi-level, total body conditioning class in which students use hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, a SilverSneakers playball and a chair for standing and/or seated support.                                       Monday-Friday (new for the summer!!) 10-10:45 a.m. SilverSneakers Certified Instructor

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch                                                                                                 Taught from a seated and standing position to enhance the flow and energy created in the combination with restorative breathing exercises.  This class is great for those with muscle and joint concerns as well as the active older adult population.                                                           Monday, Wednesday (Kim C.) 11:00-11:45am

**You do not need to be a member of Humana Insurance to participate in these classes---It is open to all members or guests of the YMCA that feel they would benefit from a chair based class.  Scholarships are available. **

SilverSneakers Special Events!  We schedule special events for Active Older Adults to participate in throughout the year!  These events give our participants the opportunity to interact with each other and enjoy fellowship together!  Watch for Announcements!

SilverSneakers class participants are invited to attend the “YMCA HEALTHY SEMINARS” each month.  A range of topics that would be of interest to Active Older Adults will be covered.

                                    

YOUTH CIRCUIT TRAINING

Did you know that the American College of Sports Medicine believes that children can benefit from a properly supervised weight training program?  The YMCA circuit training class will be a complete total body workout in our Cybex fitness room followed with some fun games to increase cardiovascular capacity.  Each class is limited to 6 participants ages 10-14 and is taught by one of our certified strength trainers.  Due to safety concerns, kids should meet in the Dog Pound Lounge each day and wait for their trainer before moving to the weight room.
