Are You Well?
If you are currently free from illness, are in decent physical
shape, and possess an adequate amount of energy, you would probably
answer, "yes" to that question. Most of us equate wellness with
physical health, and while it is certainly a factor, it is only one
of several "dimensions" that contribute to a person's overall
wellness. Wellness is defined as an active lifelong process of
becoming aware of choices and making a more balanced and fulfilling
life.
While definitions
of wellness may vary slightly depending on the source, most
definitions conclude the following about wellness:
- Wellness is a Conscious Process involving thought and planning.
- Wellness focuses on Individual Responsibility for the quality of
one's life.
- Wellness involves the pursuit of optimal health and maximization
of one's
personal potential.
At the Ottumwa
YMCA we're focusing on seven dimensions of well-being.
7 DIMENSIONS OF
WELLNESS
Physical - A healthy body, good nutrition, regular exercise,
avoiding
harmful habits, and seeking medical assistance when necessary.
Intellectual - Mentally engaged in lively interaction with the world
around
you.
Emotional - The ability to understand your own feelings, accept your
limitations, and achieve stability.
Social - The ability to relate to others, both within and outside
the family
unit.
Occupational - Preparing and making use of your gifts, skills and
talents in
order to gain purpose, happiness and enrichment in your life.
Environmental - The capability to live in a clean and safe
environment that
is not harmful to health.
Spiritual - The ethics, values and morals that guide us.
